Mary Wiseman was elected to the Dayton City Commission on Nov. 4, 1997 and took office Jan. 5, 1998.
An environmental attorney, Wiseman is a partner in the downtown law firm Faruki Gilliam and Ireland. She also does pro bono work in domestic violence cases.
Wiseman was one of the first openly gay candidates elected in Ohio history (a gay candidate in Toledo was elected the same day).
Born Nov. 17, 1961, she grew up in the Indianapolis area, the youngest of fourchildren. She graduated from Ball State University in 1984 and went to law school at the University of Arkansas, finishingsixth in her class in 1988. She moved to Dayton in 1990.
Before her election to the commission Wiseman served on Dayton's Board of Zoning Appeals andspent three years on the Environmental Advisory Board.Wiseman lives in Grafton Hill behind the Dayton Art Institute in a historic home which she renovated with longtime partner, Martha J. Harrison.
