Two Dayton police officers exchanged gunfire with a pair of would-be robbers on June 19, 1997 after the masked men attempted to rob them. The police officers were undercover narcotics detictives who were staged to back up a drug bust. They were behind a boarded-up Pizza Hut restaurant at North Alder and West Third streets when they were approached by the two gunmen.
No one was injured but the shootout apparently interefered with a planned drug sting operation expected later that day. After the shootout, about 30 police and SWAT officers cordoned off a 10-block area and searched for the suspects. By the end of the day two men were in custody. Alvin L. Brooks, 22, was charged with aggravated robbery and feloneous assault. Virgil R. Meadows, 18, was charged with feloneous assault and aggravated robbery. | ![]() DDN photo by Skip Peterson.
